The conference entitled “Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE): Innovative Solutions to Development Problems in Mediterranean countries?” was held in Toulouges (France) on December 13. This event was the final seminar of the “Study on Social and Solidarity Economy in the Latin Arc”. Led by the Pyrénées-Orientales Department, the SSE project partnership is comprised of members from all three Latin Arc states – such as France’s CRESS Corsica, Haute Corse and Hérault Departments, Spain’s Tarragona, Granada and Lleida Provincial Councils as well as Italy’s Mantova and Viterbo Provinces. The partnership has been working on the project for two years.

4th Forum of Local and Regional Authorities of the Mediterranean in Tangiers: territorial diplomacy for concrete cooperation actions in the Mediterranean.

The 4th Forum of Local and Regional Authorities of the Mediterranean was held in Tangiers on Nov 30th. Political representatives from several Mediterranean countries joined the political round table in order to discuss the role of local and regional governments in the construction of Mediterranean diplomacy.

Latin Arc to lead the “BleuTourMed” Horizontal Project under the Interreg Med Programme.

The “BleuTourMed” Horizontal Project has been approved under the framework of the “Priority Axis 3” of the Interreg Med Programme. The specific aim of the BleuTourMed project shall be to coordinate the community of modular projects on Sustainable and Coastal Tourism under the said programme. It will be launched on Nov 1st for a period of 3 years.

“Innovation and Industrial Competitiveness in Rural Areas”, “Waste Management and Circular Economy”, “Energy Poverty and Energy Efficiency”, “Biodiversity” and “Youth Entrepreneurship” are the main themes of the 2016 Latin Arc call for projects. 6 projects were approved in this year’s call.

The seminar “EuroMed Priorities and European Cooperation Programmes” was held at the Barcelona-based IEMED (Catalan for European Institute of the Mediterranean) last July 7th. Key regional actors – such as the Union for the Mediterranean – Catalan local and regional representatives as well as Technical Secretary representatives of the InterregMed and ENI-CBC cooperation programmes took part in this event.

The role of networks in European territorial cooperation: Latin Arc at the “Var Europe” seminar

The Latin Arc Executive Secretary participated in the “Var Europe” seminar held last June 28-29 in the French department of Var. Technical and political representatives of local and regional administrations, entrepreneurs and academics also took part in the event.

Arco Latino promotes Social and Solidarity Economy

On September the 4th, the first meeting of the project “Social and Solidarity Economy” took place on a video-conference call. Through sharing knowledge, best practice and a comparative study of the Arco Latino’s member’s experiences, this initiative has the main aim of promoting the important role played by Social economy in the economical development and in the Mediterranean public policies. The project has been co-founded by Arco Latino and it will run for one year.

New communication and capitalization tools for cooperation in the Mediterranean Area -COM&CAP MarInA-Med

Arco Latino took part in the Med Maritime Integrated Projects Kick-off meeting held in Marseilles last 15th and 16th of July. Maritime Integrated Projects were recently selected by the MED Programme Selection Committee, under the last call for proposals “For an integrated Maritime approach” 2007-2013. During this first Med Maritime Integrated Projects event, the Com&Cap MarInA partner’s team presented the strategic plan to coordinate the communication and capitalisation activities of the 13 Med Maritime integrated projects

New political commitments for Arco Latino

Last 8th and 9th of July the Aude General Council organized in Carcasson the XIV Arco Latino General Meeting. All the partners met up to choose the new board of governors for the period 2014-2016. The partner’s assembly approved the political declaration in which it is underlined how local and regional governments guarantee to social and territorial solidarity according to the rules of subsidiarity.

Strategic alliances for the internationalization of cities

On 7 May 2014 the Diputació de Barcelona, member of Arco Latino, organized the conference “Strategic alliances in the internationalization of cities”. The association was also represented by the province of Torino, moderator of the roundtable “Cooperation amongst local governments in the design of internationalization strategies”.

Approval of the MarInA-Med project on capitalization and communication in maritime affairs

The Med Programme has approved the Com&Cap MarInA-Med project, presented for the last 2007-2013 call for proposals as a horizontal action on capitalization and communication. Arco Latino is a partner of this initiative lead by the Catalan government (Generalitat de Catalunya) under coordination of the CRPM Intermediterranean Commission. Other partners are AVITEM (France) and the Italian Regione Molise.

Local development and fire risk management in the Mediterranean

On 25 April 2014, the Conseil Géneral des Pyrénées Orientales organized in Perpignan the seminar “Local development and fire risk management in urban-forest interface areas: a growing specific problem in the Mediterranean land?”. During the meeting a study comprising a set of conclusions and good practices locally developed in the Mediterranean area was presented.

Tarragona hosts the Arco Latino Executive Board meeting

The Diputació de Barcelona hosted on 6 May the Executive Board meeting of the association, especially focused on the political debate around the evolution of the institutional reforms in Italy, France, Spain and Catalonia. During the meeting the date of the upcoming General Assembly was set: it will take place on 8-9 July 2014 in Carcassonne. The participants also passed the proposal for the 2014-2015 Action Plan, which establishes the start-up of lobby actions, the development of projects of European territorial cooperation and decentralized cooperation in the Mediterranean and the boosting of new dissemination and communication initiatives.

Euromediterranean Youth Meeting 2014

Arco Latino cooperates with the General Directorate for Youth of the Catalan Government in the organization of the Euromediterranean Youth Week that will take place from 7 to 11 April 2014 in Barcelona. The objective of the meeting is to offer the young participants a platform for the exchange of experiences and good practices in the social entrepreneurship field.

Seventh World Urban Forum in Medellín

The 7th UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum will take place April 5-7 2014 in the city of Medellín, Colombia. The main discussion theme of this 7th Forum is ‘Urban Equity in Development - Cities for Life’.
What’s next in Arco Latino...

What’s next in Arco Latino...

In the upcoming trimester Arco Latino and its members will participate in three internal events concerning some initiatives of the network’s work commissions. During these meetings the results of the pilot projects carried out within the network territories will be presented and the projects finalized. They will also represent the starting point for future and larger initiatives.

Towards more efficient local governments in Europe

The four provincial councils of Catalonia organized the conference “Towards more efficient local governments in Europe. Visions from Europe”. The aim of the conference was to understand the current reflections and debates in Europe about the status of decentralization and local autonomy, the local responses to the crisis, the funding and the public service provision, amongst others.

Tourism as a key sector for the development and the competitiveness of the Arco Latino territories

The Diputació de Tarragona organized a seminar within the Arco Latino project Governance models for the tourism sector, during which the initiative results and conclusions were presented and discussed. It was stated that the provincial level, as well as the regional level, are the most appropriate levels to favor the participation of both public and private actors in the field of tourist governance.
