Promoting biodiversity in the Mediterranean Arc

Project description and goals:

Through the LOCAL-CUBIAM project, we will map out the Mediterranean fruit and vegetable varieties that have been largely ignored. Tellingly, some of these varieties have nearly disappeared since the start of the Green Revolution, which was initiated by Norman Borlaug in the sixties.  In promoting these crop varieties, the LOCAL-CUBIAM project aims to articulate a larger strategy for the recovery of plant genetic resources in the Mediterranean. Such resources constitute the basis of the Mediterranean diet. Furthermore, this is yet another way to preserve and enhance the Mediterranean natural heritage. Thus, this initiative shall also provide incentives for the recovery of traditional cultivation methods. With the appropriate local management strategies, this project could become an effective tool for social inclusion through the creation of social orchards. Moreover, the promotion of youth employment and training shall be reinforced by other related activities such as transhumance, gastro-tourism and the agri-food industry.

It is among our objectives to submit a project proposal to an EU funding call (LIFE).


1 – The study, identification, recovery and analysis of regional crop varieties through mapping.

2 – Cultivation of the recovered crop varieties and exchange of seeds for analytical and commerical purposes.

3- Promotion of agriculture among youth as a solution to unemployment

4 -  Creation of an orchard network that shall favour the inclusion of the rather disadvantaged and deprived sectors of society.

5 – Research centres and training workshops on agriculture, environment, health and tourism issues.

 6  - International symposia for the sharing of information and joint problem resolution.

Experiences, challenges and opportunities of Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) in the Mediterranean: Final Seminar of the SSE project

The conference entitled “Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE): Innovative Solutions to Development Problems in Mediterranean countries?” was held in Toulouges (France) on December 13. This event was the final seminar of the “Study on Social and Solidarity Economy in the Latin Arc”. Led by the Pyrénées-Orientales Department, the SSE project partnership is comprised of members from all three Latin Arc states – such as France’s CRESS Corsica, Haute Corse and Hérault Departments, Spain’s Tarragona, Granada and Lleida Provincial Councils as well as Italy’s Mantova and Viterbo Provinces. The partnership has been working on the project for two years.

4th Forum of Local and Regional Authorities of the Mediterranean in Tangiers: territorial diplomacy for concrete cooperation actions in the Mediterranean.

The 4th Forum of Local and Regional Authorities of the Mediterranean was held in Tangiers on Nov 30th. Political representatives from several Mediterranean countries joined the political round table in order to discuss the role of local and regional governments in the construction of Mediterranean diplomacy.

The Latin Arc will host the European Cooperation Projects Workshop Day on February 23rd in Barcelona. The event will be comprised of several preparatory workshops for the submission of projects to the upcoming EU funding calls.

First working meeting of the ES-EM-CIA and EMPL-ECO-MED projects to be held Lleida on February 7th

Latin Arc will participate in the first working meeting of the ES-EM-CIA and EMPL-ECO-MED projects. These two initiatives, which were approved last October in Latin Arc’s call for projects, focus on issues of employment and entrepreneurship in rural areas.
