Promoting biodiversity in the Mediterranean Arc

Project description and goals:

Through the LOCAL-CUBIAM project, we will map out the Mediterranean fruit and vegetable varieties that have been largely ignored. Tellingly, some of these varieties have nearly disappeared since the start of the Green Revolution, which was initiated by Norman Borlaug in the sixties.  In promoting these crop varieties, the LOCAL-CUBIAM project aims to articulate a larger strategy for the recovery of plant genetic resources in the Mediterranean. Such resources constitute the basis of the Mediterranean diet. Furthermore, this is yet another way to preserve and enhance the Mediterranean natural heritage. Thus, this initiative shall also provide incentives for the recovery of traditional cultivation methods. With the appropriate local management strategies, this project could become an effective tool for social inclusion through the creation of social orchards. Moreover, the promotion of youth employment and training shall be reinforced by other related activities such as transhumance, gastro-tourism and the agri-food industry.

It is among our objectives to submit a project proposal to an EU funding call (LIFE).

1 – The study, identification, recovery and analysis of regional crop varieties through mapping.

2 – Cultivation of the recovered crop varieties and exchange of seeds for analytical and commerical purposes.

3- Promotion of agriculture among youth as a solution to unemployment

4 -  Creation of an orchard network that shall favour the inclusion of the rather disadvantaged and deprived sectors of society.

5 – Research centres and training workshops on agriculture, environment, health and tourism issues.

6  - International symposia for the sharing of information and joint problem resolution.
