Spatial Scenarios: New Tools for Local Governments

Project description

The goal of this project is to transfer the methodology of spatial scenarios that were developed in the ESPON 2006(3.2.) programme to the local-regional scale and – more specifically – to the Mediterranean context.

Through the Espon-Spatial scenarios project, we have worked on the actualization of wider EU spatial scenarios and the methodology transfer to NUTS III (provinces) in the Western Mediterranean.  In this vein, we have also concentrated our efforts on data collection and the assessment of trends in order to elaborate quantitative and qualitative scenarios – regarding community, cohesion and competitiveness – and thematic scenarios on strategic aspects (such as economic aspects and the financial crisis, demographic aspects, transportation, mobility, climate change, governance, etc).

ESPON (European Spatial Planning Observation Network) is a research program applied to the EU territorial development. It is related to the Structural Funds and it informs the European Comission and the EU member states.

ESPON’s main objective is to provide European, regional and local decision-makers with relevant information on the most important trends regarding the territorial impact of policies. It also provides support in the formulation and implementation of these policies.
